Bone Density Testing What is bone mineral density (BMD) testing?Osteoporosis screening tests can be performed using portable scanners in a variety of settings including health fairs, corporate wellness programs and other public service venues. This type of testing is usually limited to the peripheral skeleton such as the forearm or heel but it does provide a strong indication whether osteoporosis is present in the central skeleton. If the results of the portable scanner test indicate decreased bone density more detailed scanning of the central skeleton is usually required to fully assess the condition. This testing of the hip or spine is performed using stationary scanners. The stationary scanners use x-ray technology, in low dosage, and take only a few minutes to perform with virtually no discomfort. The equipment used by Osteoporosis Diagnostic Center. is called a DXA unit. It is a Holgic Delphi that is the “gold standard”. This is an x-ray technique that determines the percentage of radiation being absorbed by the bone being studied. The amount of radiation from a typical bone density test is only a fraction of that received from other x-ray procedures. In fact, you receive more radiation being out in the sun for extended periods of time. The DXA scanner puts out less radiation than that of a metal detector at the airport.
